Level Indication System for Ballast Tanks - by Alpha Automation

Description

The Level Indication System for Ballast Tanks project involved the design and installation of a reliable monitoring solution capable of providing accurate real‑time readings for both port and starboard ballast tanks. Using a Mitsubishi PLC as the core controller, the system was engineered to receive and process level signals from the existing sensors, ensuring stable and consistent measurements even under dynamic vessel conditions. All field inputs were properly scaled, filtered, and validated within the PLC logic to guarantee dependable data acquisition.

Once the control logic was established, the PLC was integrated with a dedicated display interface designed for clear and intuitive visualization. The tank levels were presented simultaneously in percentage (%) and in meters, giving the crew both a quick operational overview and precise numerical values for decision‑making. This dual‑format display improved situational awareness and allowed for more accurate ballast handling during loading, unloading, and vessel trimming operations.

The final stage of the project included full system testing, calibration, and verification under real operating conditions. Communication between sensors, PLC, and display was checked for stability, while alarm thresholds and safety parameters were fine‑tuned to meet operational requirements. The completed system delivered a modern, user‑friendly, and highly reliable solution that significantly enhances ballast management efficiency and overall vessel safety.
