Successful Inspection of KANGRIM Inert Gas Generator – Operational Verification & Analyzer Calibration

During a recent onboard attendance, our team carried out a full operational check and performance verification of the vessel’s KANGRIM Inert Gas Generator (IGG). The inspection focused on ensuring that the system met all safety and operational requirements, with particular attention to combustion performance, oxygen control, and the correct functioning of all protective interlocks. Each subsystem was evaluated to confirm stable operation under normal working conditions.

The scope of work included verification of the start‑up sequence, assessment of flame stability, and continuous monitoring of oxygen (O₂) levels at the inert gas outlet. Functional testing of the control system and analyzer feedback loops was performed to ensure accurate response to pressure, temperature, and flow conditions. Additional checks were conducted on the scrubber and associated equipment to confirm proper operation and overall system integrity.

During operation, a deviation in O₂ readings was observed, with measured values not fully aligned with expected operating conditions despite stable system performance. Further investigation confirmed that the issue was caused by analyzer drift — a common characteristic in oxygen measurement systems over time. This finding allowed the team to focus corrective actions on the analyzer rather than the combustion or control systems.

Corrective work included fine zero and span adjustment of the Xendos 1800 O₂ analyzer, verification of analyzer response under reference conditions, and validation of signal stability within the control system. Following these adjustments, the analyzer was restored to accurate performance, providing stable O₂ readings within required limits. The IGG system was subsequently verified to operate safely, reliably, and fully within specification. Routine calibration of oxygen analyzers remains essential to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of inert gas systems in marine applications.
