Valve Remote Control System for Ballast Tanks - by Alpha Automation

Description

The Level Indication System for Ballast Tanks project involved the development of a fully integrated monitoring and control solution using a Mitsubishi PLC as the central processing unit. The PLC was programmed to read the status of the limit switches installed on each Water Ballast valve, accurately detecting whether each valve was in the open or closed position. These signals were then processed and transmitted to an additional display monitor, providing the crew with a clear and immediate visual indication of the valve status in real time.

Beyond simple monitoring, the system was engineered to offer full remote‑control capability. Through the PLC interface, operators could command each ballast valve to open or close directly from the control station, with all relevant feedback signals displayed to confirm successful operation. This functionality significantly improved operational efficiency, reduced manual intervention, and enhanced safety by ensuring that valve movements were always verified through the limit‑switch feedback loop.

The display monitor was designed with multiple viewing modes to support different operational needs. Users could switch to a full flow‑diagram view, showing the entire ballast system layout with live valve status, or select a consolidated list view that presented all valves together with their current state. This flexible visualization approach allowed for quick situational awareness, easier troubleshooting, and more effective ballast management during cargo operations and vessel trimming.
